Surgery

Surgery Services is the largest of London Health Sciences Centre's (LHSC) six major Clinical Service Areas and includes such key programs as CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics), Cardiac Care, Critical Care, Multi-Organ Transplant Program, Trauma, Surgical Care and the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic.

The mission of Surgery Services is to provide the highest quality of compassionate care to patients and their families, to train and mentor the next generation of surgeons, and to advance surgical knowledge through the pursuit of scientific discovery and innovation. Surgery Services has undergone a renewal in the last six years, recruiting a number of outstanding clinical academics, increasing our representation of women and designated groups, heightening our research profile and playing an increasingly strategic role in medical education in Southwestern Ontario.

Your support has allowed Surgery Services' renewal to be taken to dramatic new heights in the new North Tower. This state-of-the-art facility houses 76 new in-patient beds and enables the co-location of general surgery and orthopaedics services - which often provide shared care of trauma patients. Surgery Services has begun to develop its operating room suites in the new North Tower. In the short term, two new operating rooms will bring the total to 17 suites. With future approvals, five additional operating rooms will be developed to take advantage of new minimally invasive surgery technologies. Finally, one more operating room will be added to handle the demands associated with LHSC being a regional tertiary cancer, trauma and vascular surgery centre.
