London Regional Cancer Program

Despite remarkable advances in early diagnosis and advanced treatment, cancer remains a serious health challenge for Canadians.  It can affect many parts of the body, but the most common forms are breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men.  Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women.

Yet there is good news.  Today, a little more than 50 per cent of all Canadian cancer patients will be cured of their disease - an improvement from a virtual death sentence a century ago.  These advances are due in large part to research findings that have been translated into better diagnosis and treatment.

London Regional Cancer Program

The London Regional Cancer Program at London Health Sciences Centre offers a coordinated and seamless delivery of services for cancer patients and their families throughout southwestern Ontario, from prevention and diagnosis through to treatment and supportive care.  The program has a long history of leadership and innovation in both cancer treatment and basic and clinical research, for which it is recognized internationally.

The London Regional Cancer Program has developed multi-disciplinary cancer care teams focused on specific disease sites - lung, prostate, breast, colon and others.  Surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurse practitioners, dietitians, social workers and therapists work together to provide the best possible care for each patient.  Our hospital serves as a hub, pulling together a network of community and regional partners.

The London Regional Cancer Program is home to the London Prostate Cancer Centre, the Pamela Greenaway-Kohlmeier Translational Breast Cancer Research Laboratory and the Cancer Research Laboratories.  The program also boasts the latest in radiation treatment technology.  This includes a tomotherapy machine, the first in Canada, which allows for extremely accurate dose delivery that maximizes tumour coverage and minimizes the dose to normal tissue.
