An Update on the Gerald C. Baines Centre for Translational
Cancer Research
Strengthening our city and our Hospital as a
leading centre of translational cancer research
The History...
In 2004, the Gerald C. Baines Foundation announced a $1 million gift to
establish the Gerald C. Baines Centre for Translational Cancer Research as part
of London Health Sciences Centre's London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP), which
is home to world-class cancer care, research and education.
What is Translational Cancer Research?
Also known as "lab-to-bedside" or "bench-to-bedside" research, translational
research involves identifying current significant research projects and
directly applying that learning and new knowledge to enhance patient care.
Construction Update
Scheduled for a grand opening in fall of 2010, construction of the
state-of-the-art Gerald C. Baines Centre for Translational Cancer Research is
well under way. There are four areas to the 11,625-square-foot space:
Clinical Research Unit: With advanced clinical spaces for specimen
collection and handling, patient interviews and assessment as well as treatment
administration, the Clinical Research Unit will allow LRCP to take on more
sophisticated clinical trials than it ever has before.
Molecular Imaging Laboratories: The first such facility in the
city of London, these laboratories will provide researchers with new ways of
visualizing cancer in order to develop diagnostic and treatment tools.
Imaging Research Laboratory: The laboratory will allow specialists
to analyze the more subtle aspects of cancer images efficiently and on an
in-depth basis to better understand cancer and design and evaluate new
therapies.
Collaborative and Support Area: Researchers, research fellows and
clinical trial and translational research trainees will use this space to meet
and interact with the data that relates to their research.
Donor Appreciation
This facility is taking real shape - thanks to the leadership and vision of the
Gerald C. Baines Foundation, the assistance of local and national organizations
and the support of community leaders and donors throughout London and
Southwestern Ontario. Of the total fundraising goal of $6,050,000, only
$550,000 remains towards equipping this state-of-the-art research facility. We
are incredibly excited to be closer than ever to seeing the dream of this
centre become reality and we would not be at this stage of the project without
the support of donors.
