2010 Nominees
Mike Berta
Mike Berta is Manager of London Health Sciences Centre's Renal
Program and a member of the Board of Directors for the Crest Centre for
Developmentally & Physically Challenged Children. He was nominated for the
Martha Curgin Inspiration Award by Cathy Harding and Don Bester from the Renal
Program. In their nomination, Cathy and Don noted that "Mike strongly believes
in an open-door concept that encourages employees to speak with him any time"
and that Mike "serves as a teacher, coach and mentor. He is always encouraging
and available to give any help or advice." With Mike's help and support,
the first annual Jason Bellamy Memorial Slo-Pitch tournament took place in June
of 1998 and supported a quiet room in the new University Hospital Dialysis
Unit.
Linda Brickwood
Linda Brickwood is a Registered Nurse, Endoscopy and I.V.
Services, at London Health Sciences Centre's University Hospital and was
nominated for the Martha Curgin Inspiration Award by Dr. Felicia Otchet and Dr.
John Howard. Their comments about Linda's approach to work and life included
that "Linda always has a smile and she is the epitome of patience and
dedication" and that she "instils a sense of confidence, helping people to
handle future difficult situations themselves". Linda's colleagues are truly
inspired by her care for patients, her dedication and her patience.
Jacqueline Crandall
Jacqueline Crandall is a Nurse Practitioner, Acute Medical Care,
at London Health Sciences Centre's University Hospital and was nominated for
the Martha Curgin Inspiration Award by Eileen deVeber and David Scratch from
Inpatient Medicine. In nominating their colleague, David and Eileen stated that
"professionalism is always underlying Jackie's caring, altruistic and
compassionate manner." They cited a particular example where Jackie made the
best of a difficult situation regarding the terminal illness of a co-worker by
implementing a new program called "Share the Care" to organize everyone's
efforts, which helped grant their co-worker her wish to die at home. Jackie's
care and dedication to teamwork are truly inspiring.
Colleen DeJager
Colleen DeJager, Manager, Memorial and Planned Giving at London Health Sciences
Foundation, was nominated for the Martha Curgin Inspiration Award by Foundation
colleague Lisa Mazurek and Foundation volunteer and donor Elizabeth A. Jones.
In their nomination, Lisa and Elizabeth stated that "Colleen takes great pride
in her work and never does anything half way. She works long hours because she
truly loves her job and wants to do the best she can for her donors." Colleen
is always willing to help other Foundation staff members and strives to inspire
her donors and co-workers to help enable the great care available at London
Health Sciences Centre.
