The collective generosity of our donors continues to have a
significant impact on patient care. As a result of our community's
philanthropic support, the new Rorabeck Bourne Joint Replacement Clinic was
officially opened at a formal ceremony held at London Health Sciences
Centre's (LHSC) University Hospital on June 16, 2009.
"Our donors allow us to bring advances in healthcare to this
region sooner than would otherwise be possible and to explore areas of research
and treatment that would otherwise be unattainable," says LHSC Board Chair
Robert Siskind.
Features of the new Rorabeck Bourne Joint Replacement Clinic
include:
-
A one-stop facility for initial appointments, pre- and post-operative
assessments and follow-up visits.
-
12 exam rooms, two procedure rooms and a plaster / cast room.
-
An education centre for patients and their families.
-
A modern waiting area with specially-designed seating.
Named in honour of Dr. Cecil Rorabeck and Dr. Robert Bourne, who
provided the overall vision for the clinic and made a philanthropic
contribution of $250,000 each to help bring that vision to life, the clinic was
also supported by a $1 million gift from advanced medical device developer
Smith & Nephew.
Joint replacement surgery increases mobility, decreases pain and
reduces dependence on medication, thus improving the overall quality of life
for patients. The Rorabeck Bourne Joint Replacement Clinic will have a profound
effect on the delivery of Orthopaedic Care in our community.
"Donors allow us to stay on the leading edge of medical research
and to truly innovate for the world as we care for our patients," says Siskind.
