On April 18, four cancer doctors from London Health Sciences Centre will endure one of the most famous and gruelling sporting events in the world in order to inspire investment in cancer research. They will run in the Boston Marathon - a road race synonymous with determination and endurance - as a way to show their support for the brave and courageous people who have been affected by cancer.

The team of four will run a combined 168 km during the marathon and are hoping to raise the equivalent of $1,000 per kilometer for a total of $168,000 to support research at London Regional Cancer Program - hence the name "168k for Cancer". The fundraiser began life in 2007 thanks to Dr. Joseph Chin, Chief, Surgical Oncology; and Dr. David D'Souza, Radiation Oncologist; who have since been joined by Dr. Scott Ernst, Divisional Head, Medical Oncology; and Dr. David Palma, Radiation Oncologist.

Over the first two marathons, the team's efforts helped raise over $153,000 for cancer research and with the help of their colleagues and community, they will add their goal of another $168K for cancer. Specifically, the proceeds from this year's event will support prostate cancer research, brachytherapy for breast cancer treatment, patient outcomes research and go towards equipping the new Gerald C. Baines Translational Cancer Research Centre.
